Work Experiences for High School Students

Local businesses agree that students need extra job training, mentoring, experience, and exploration. A 2018 Trinity Together business survey indicated that 56% of business felt current employees lacked work skills. 25% of businesses surveyed said they had difficulty filling positions due to applicants not having experience in the workforce. Luckily, in Trinity County we’re part of a business community that wants youth to succeed.

The Career Experience Program (CEP) is a collaborative effort between Trinity High School, Trinity Together, and our local businesses to provide students with work experiences. Most of the Job Shadows and Internships listed here are unpaid. However, it’s important to think about your career path with a long-term vision. Work experiences help students advance themselves and their future careers in the following ways:

  • Build experiences that help you understand what your likes and dislikes are
  • Explore career options
  • Resume building
  • Discover local employment
  • Lead to future employment
  • Earn high school and college credit
  • Decide on an education pathway after high school
  • Skill development

Job Shadows

A Job Shadow allows students to follow and observe an employer for a short period of time, giving them insight into a particular industry or occupation. Job Shadows are volunteer only, can occur during the school day, after school, or on the weekend. Students will be required to turn in a short interview questionnaire with the person they shadow.

Internships

An Internship requires a longer commitment, allowing students to have experiences in order to build skills, create connections, and earn high school and college credits. Internships can occur during school (schedule permitting), after school, and on the weekends. At Trinity High School, internships are part of Shasta College course called Worksite Learning. Students will have to register for the course and commit to interning a specific number of hours to earn credits.

How do I get started?

Students who are interested in a Job Shadow or Internship will need to fill out participation forms. These forms can be found in the Counseling office on the Trinity High School campus.
